Why Level 1 Restrictions Are Needed
Rand Water, Gauteng’s main water supplier, has introduced Level 1 water restrictions due to increased water demand and ongoing supply issues. The restrictions aim to manage the region’s water resources effectively.
Challenges Leading to Restrictions
Rand Water CEO Sipho Mosai pointed out key issues prompting these restrictions:
- Rising Water Demand: High consumption rates are straining water availability.
- Illegal Mining Activities: Unauthorized mining is impacting water resources.
- Unauthorized Connections: Illegal water connections are worsening the situation.
Additionally, Johannesburg Water is experiencing service disruptions due to the high demand for water.
Duration and Impact of Restrictions
The Level 1 water restrictions will remain in effect until March 2025. These measures are designed to help balance water supply and demand.
What You Can and Cannot Do
1. Garden Watering Limits:
- Watering gardens is banned between 6 am and 6 pm.
2. Restrictions on Cleaning:
- Washing paved areas and driveways with hosepipes is not allowed.
Daily Water-Saving Tips
Rand Water recommends the following tips to conserve water:
- Prevent Dripping Taps: Ensure taps are completely closed to avoid leaks.
- Wash Cars with Grey Water: Clean your car on the lawn using grey water to water the grass.
- Reduce Shower Time: Keep showers short to save water.
- Rinse with a Glass: Use a glass of water to rinse your mouth while brushing your teeth.
- Take Shallow Baths: Limit bath water depth to 100mm or less.
- Reuse Grey Water: Utilize grey water for garden and plant watering.
