An 11-year-old boy, Waldo Verwey, remains in a critical but stable condition after the Casseldale shooting that took place late Thursday evening. He is currently being treated in the intensive care unit at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.
What Happened on Thursday Night
According to Waldo’s mother, Christenette Barnard, the family had taken their dogs outside shortly before 10:00 p.m. She and her younger son returned to the house with some of the dogs, while Waldo stayed outside. As they began closing curtains and windows, she heard a loud bang and wondered who would be setting off fireworks so late at night.
Her younger son ran outside to see the fireworks and came back saying that Waldo was dead. Christenette rushed out and found her son with severe head injuries. She immediately called for help.
Medical Condition and Treatment
The bullet struck Waldo just above his eye and exited at the back of his head. During the air ambulance flight to Johannesburg, he suffered a stroke due to shock. Doctors are now waiting for the swelling in his brain to decrease before any further medical intervention can take place.
A CT scan revealed significant brain trauma and bruising, but his family remains hopeful. Waldo is being closely monitored by specialists at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.
Family Expresses Gratitude
Family spokesperson Suné Meadon thanked the community for their overwhelming support, prayers, and care. “The Verwey family is deeply moved by everyone’s compassion during this time,” she said.
The family also expressed appreciation to those who attended the October 4 mass prayer and drive held in Waldo’s honour. Local artist Veldstem’s song dedicated to Waldo and his brother Logan has further touched the community.
Official Clarifications
The family has confirmed that, at this stage, the circumstances surrounding the Casseldale shooting have not been officially determined. They also clarified that no BackaBuddy campaign or trust account has been opened for Waldo or Logan. Any legitimate fundraising initiatives will be communicated through official family channels.
Investigation Ongoing
Springs SAPS are investigating the Casseldale shooting and have not yet confirmed any details regarding the motive or suspects. The family continues to ask the public to keep Waldo in their thoughts and prayers as he fights for recovery.
