The FBI has launched an investigation into what it described as an “assassination attempt” of former President Donald Trump at his Florida golf club. Trump, who was not harmed, was on the premises when the incident occurred. According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, the Secret Service spotted a rifle barrel protruding from a fence. Agents fired at a man seen hiding in the bushes along the perimeter before the suspect fled the scene in a car. Law enforcement officers later detained the individual on a nearby highway.
Suspect Identified as Ryan Wesley Routh
Three law enforcement sources identified the suspect as Ryan Wesley Routh, a small business owner from Hawaii. Routh had reportedly made critical remarks about Trump on social media. At the time of the incident, the suspect was positioned 300 to 500 yards away from Trump. Authorities recovered an AK-47-style rifle, a GoPro camera, and several backpacks from the location where the suspect had been hiding.
Trump’s Response to the Incident
Following the event, Trump expressed his gratitude toward the Secret Service and law enforcement via his Truth Social platform. “The job done was absolutely outstanding,” he wrote, acknowledging the swift response that ensured his safety. Trump had been golfing with a donor, Steve Witkoff, when the shots were fired. He thanked the U.S. Secret Service, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, and the law enforcement personnel involved in protecting him during the incident.
Roads Closed and Investigation Ongoing
Nine hours after the apparent assassination attempt, roads surrounding Trump International Golf Club remained closed as law enforcement continued their investigation. Palm Beach County State Attorney David Aronberg confirmed the suspect had remained silent when apprehended and described the situation as a “too close for comfort incident.” He also commended the Secret Service for quickly spotting the threat and neutralizing the danger by firing the first shot.
Heavy Law Enforcement Presence Around Trump International Golf Club
Law enforcement officers have maintained a heavy presence at Trump International Golf Club, located near major roads and close to Palm Beach International Airport. The suspect had allegedly positioned himself near a part of the golf course where holes five and six intersect, a secluded area with thick bushes. Officers are expected to remain on-site for the duration of the investigation to ensure the safety of Trump and others at the golf club.
