Authorities Brace for Severe Weather Conditions
Authorities across various provinces are on high alert due to severe weather conditions, including snowfall and icy temperatures.
Snowfall in Western Cape
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a series of severe weather warnings effective from Monday. A Level 2 warning for snow has been issued, primarily affecting the central parts of the Western Cape and southern parts of the Northern Cape. Snow has already been reported in the Cape Winelands, including the Matroosberg.
Cape Town on High Alert
In Cape Town, authorities are on high alert due to continued rainfall. Traffic spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout urged the public to stay alert for localized flooding. “The City will communicate as far as possible on affected roads, but incidents can occur at any moment,” Bezuidenhout said, urging motorists to drive cautiously.
Icy Conditions in Johannesburg
Johannesburg residents have been warned to expect icy weather for the rest of the week. EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi highlighted the increased use of heating devices, which could lead to fire incidents. “City of Joburg EMS remains on high alert, monitoring all seven regions, especially our most vulnerable communities,” Mulaudzi said.

High Winds in KwaZulu-Natal
In KwaZulu-Natal, the Cogta department remains on high alert following a severe wind warning. Residents in districts such as Ugu, uMgungundlovu, uThukela, Amajuba, Zululand, King Cetshwayo, and iLembe have been urged to prepare for high wind speeds, expected to reach up to 70 km/h with gusts exceeding 80 km/h. The combination of strong winds and high temperatures increases the risk of fires.
Precautions and Safety Measures
The department has warned residents about the dangers of runaway fires and urged them to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their properties.
Summary
Authorities in various provinces are bracing for severe weather conditions, with snowfall in the Western Cape, icy conditions in Johannesburg, and high winds in KwaZulu-Natal. Residents are advised to stay alert, drive cautiously, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
