Introduction
Meta, the parent company of popular social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, faced a widespread outage on Tuesday (5 March 2024), leaving thousands of users unable to access their accounts. The disruption, attributed to a “technical issue” by the company, was resolved within approximately two hours.
User Reports and Impact
As the outage unfolded, as many as 500,000 Facebook users encountered difficulties logging in or accessing the site, according to the outage tracker DownDetector. Simultaneously, Instagram received around 50,000 outage reports, with an additional 10,000 reported for Facebook Messenger. Users experienced issues such as being unexpectedly logged out of their accounts or encountering error messages preventing the loading of feeds.

Meta’s Response and Resolution
Meta, acknowledging the service disruption, promptly addressed the situation. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone assured users that the company was actively working on resolving the technical issues. Within an hour and a half of the initial reports, the number of users encountering problems significantly decreased. Meta’s status page indicated “major disruptions” affecting various areas of the platform, including Facebook login.
Around noon Eastern Time, Meta officially announced the resolution of the issue. Stone expressed apologies for any inconvenience caused by the outage and stated, “We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted.”
Previous Outages and Industry Response
While major platform outages are infrequent, Meta faced a notable disruption in 2021 when Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp were down for nearly six hours. The company assured users that the outage was not the result of malicious activity but rather an issue with a software update.
The outage occurred amid heightened concerns about cybersecurity, with the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency confirming that there was no indication of malicious cyber activity or a connection to the Super Tuesday primary elections taking place that day.

Conspiracy Theory Emerges
Despite Meta’s official explanation, outside sources have introduced a conspiracy theory suggesting that the Meta outage might be linked to a transition from conventional servers to AI servers. This unverified claim has sparked speculation, adding an intriguing layer to the incident.
Ongoing Vigilance
As technology continues to play an integral role in our lives, service outages like these serve as reminders of the potential vulnerabilities in the digital landscape. Users and industry experts remain vigilant, especially in the wake of recent network outages experienced by other major telecommunications providers.
