A video capturing the brutal assault of three individuals by a VIP Protection Unit on the N1 highway in Fourways, Johannesburg, has gone viral, leaving South Africans in a state of shock and anger. The incident involved armed officers dragging the victims from a vehicle and subjecting them to violent kicks while they lay defenseless on the road. The unit responsible was identified as Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s VIP Protection Unit. As a result, the officials involved have been suspended pending an investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
Details of the Assault:
The victims, identified as South African Defence Force (SANDF) members undergoing military police training, were traveling from Johannesburg to Pretoria when they were approached by a black SUV, later revealed to be a BMW X5. One of the occupants of the BMW pointed an assault rifle at the driver, causing the victims to fear a hijacking. The victims noticed the absence of flashing blue lights or sirens, which would have indicated the presence of police.
The SUVs accompanying the BMW boxed in the victims’ vehicle, forcing them to stop on the N1 highway. The armed individuals then emerged, surrounded the car, and brandished firearms. After unsuccessful attempts to break the car’s windscreen, they shattered the rear window using a rifle. The driver, L’vaughn Fisher, was struck on the head with a firearm and forcibly removed from the vehicle while already unconscious. Shockingly, the video footage shows one of the attackers continuing to assault Fisher by repeatedly kicking and stomping on his head.
Response and Investigations:
Fisher has since filed a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm at the Sandton Police Station. Action Society, an advocacy group, expressed shock and concern that IPID has only pursued a single charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, while omitting charges such as attempted murder, intimidation, pointing a firearm, and malicious damage to property. IPID spokesperson Robbie Raburabu, however, refuted these claims, stating that IPID is indeed investigating three charges of assault, malicious damage to property, and pointing a firearm.
The incident has triggered outrage among the public, highlighting concerns about the conduct and accountability of VIP Protection Units. The suspension of the officials involved and the initiation of an investigation demonstrate a commitment to addressing the issue and holding those responsible accountable for their actions.
The viral video depicting the assault by a VIP Protection Unit in South Africa has ignited a wave of shock and outrage. The incident raises serious questions about the behavior and actions of security personnel entrusted with protecting public officials. The investigation by IPID is crucial in establishing the full extent of the offenses committed and ensuring justice for the victims. This incident serves as a reminder of the need for transparency, accountability, and the enforcement of strict protocols within law enforcement agencies to prevent such abuses of power in the future.
