Braving the cold weather for a charitable cause, learners from St Dunstan’s Preparatory School and College participated in the Headmaster’s Polar Bear Swim Challenge for the second consecutive year on June 23. About 100 participants, including parents and educators, joined the challenge, which aimed to raise funds and awareness for disadvantaged members of society.
Among the attendees were ambassadors Percy Montgomery, a former Springbok rugby player, and Terence Parkin, an Olympics silver medalist, representing the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation. The foundation generously donated 10,000 blankets and R10,000 towards the school’s initiative.

Craig McIlrath, the headmaster of St Dunstan’s Preparatory School, expressed gratitude to the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation for their continued support. He emphasized that the experience of enduring the cold for a short while helped the participants understand the hardships faced by underprivileged communities. The donated blankets, along with contributions from the participants, will be given to various charities, including Hospice East Rand.
Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation CEO Chantel Wittstock said, “We are pleased to have supported this great cause again this year. We are hoping to make this bigger and better every year and get more schools in Benoni involved in this community project. This initiative also helps to raise awareness for the Foundation’s swimming projects.”
As a reward for their efforts, all successful participants received a hot cup of coffee and chocolate.
