One of South Africa’s largest telecommunications companies, MTN, is facing a US Department of Justice (DoJ) investigation. The MTN investigation relates to the company’s former operations in Afghanistan and its stake in Iran, raising serious concerns about past business practices.
Details of the MTN Investigation
MTN revealed the ongoing probe in its 2025 interim financial results. The company confirmed that the DoJ approached it through external US legal counsel to provide information regarding the matter.
In its statement, MTN said it is fully cooperating with the inquiry:
“MTN is cooperating with the DoJ and voluntarily responding to requests for information. The company will update the market as appropriate on any material developments.”
A US grand jury is currently reviewing evidence to determine whether formal charges should be filed. Although grand juries do not decide guilt, they can recommend a criminal trial if sufficient evidence is found.
Focus on Operations in Afghanistan and Iran
According to reports, the MTN investigation includes allegations that the company paid protection money to militant groups in Afghanistan. Questions have also been raised over how MTN secured its licence in Iran, sparking legal disputes in both South Africa and abroad.
The case has drawn further attention because of MTN’s 49% stake in Iranian mobile operator Irancell. The deal, dating back to 2006, has been controversial and continues to attract scrutiny.
Turkcell Dispute Over Irancell Stake
Adding to the complexity, MTN is battling an ongoing legal dispute with Turkish telecom giant Turkcell. Turkcell claims MTN acquired its Irancell stake through corrupt practices, pushing them out of the deal unfairly.
Turkcell alleges that political influence and misconduct played a role in the award of MTN’s minority shareholder position in the government-controlled Iranian operator.

The MTN investigation also comes at a time of strained relations between South Africa and the United States. Recent US tariffs of 30% on South African exports, alongside accusations of human rights abuses, have worsened diplomatic tensions.
