Residents urged to prepare as 48-hour supply cut begins Monday
A major water shortage is expected to affect large parts of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni starting Monday, as Rand Water begins essential maintenance work that will halve water supply for 48 hours.
Maintenance to Cut Water Pressure by 50%
Rand Water will reduce pumping capacity to just 50% as it carries out planned maintenance at its Eikenhof and Zwartkopjes facilities. The scheduled work begins at 5am on Monday, June 30th, and is set to conclude by 7am on Wednesday, July 2nd.

Water Tankers and Delayed Recovery
Ekurhuleni municipality spokesperson Zweli Dlamini confirmed that water tankers will be dispatched to affected regions to offer temporary relief. However, residents should brace for a longer recovery time, especially in high-lying areas or those dependent on pumping systems.
“Full restoration of the water supply may take up to seven days after maintenance ends,” said Dlamini.
Joburg Water Urges Residents to Store Water
Joburg Water has also advised residents and businesses to store sufficient water before the shutdown begins. Water tankers are only expected to be deployed after the first 24 hours of the maintenance period.
“We recommend making the necessary preparations to avoid inconvenience,” said Joburg Water in an official statement.
Prepare Now for Upcoming Water Shortage
With a water shortage looming, residents are strongly encouraged to stock up on water and plan ahead for the next several days. The temporary drop in supply could severely impact daily routines, especially for households and businesses in elevated areas.
