Every year on June 5, World Environment Day brings together millions of individuals worldwide to focus on protecting and restoring the Earth. This year is particularly special as the event celebrates its 50th anniversary.
One way individuals can contribute to environmental preservation is by owning and driving a hybrid car, which produces lower emissions compared to traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines. In South Africa, the Toyota Corolla Cross stands out as the most sought-after hybrid car according to data analysis from January 1 to April 30, 2023. This popular model generates the highest number of inquiries from consumers, indicating a strong likelihood of purchase. The average price for a Toyota Corolla Cross on AutoTrader is R512,019, with an average mileage of 10,791km and an average registration year of 2022. It emits only 98g/km of CO2 emissions. The Toyota Corolla, a sibling model, is also environmentally friendly, emitting only 81g/km, with an average price of R473,758, an average mileage of 14,482km, and an average registration year of 2022.
It’s worth noting that there is no direct correlation between the purchase price of a vehicle and the emissions it generates. For example, the Volvo XC90 emits a mere 49g/km of CO2, despite its average price of R951,102, average mileage of 51,557km, and an average registration year of 2019.
Another notable hybrid vehicle with low emissions is the BMW i8, the first series-produced plug-in hybrid sports car. With an average price of R1,236,832, an average mileage of 37,934km, and an average registration year of 2017, the BMW i8 emits only 49g/km of CO2. Since its launch in 2014, the i8 has been a pioneer in environmental sustainability. It features all-wheel drive, with the combustion engine powering the rear wheels and the electric motor driving the front wheels. Additionally, the i8 can operate in pure electric mode, reaching speeds of up to 120km/h without generating any emissions.
Although the BMW i8 has been discontinued, its impact on environmentally conscious motorists will never be forgotten. It serves as a symbol of passion for saving the planet through innovative hybrid technology.
