The bodies of two suspected illegal miners were recovered from a shallow excavation in which they were trapped in New Modder on May 31.
Members of Bad Boyz Security, who were in the area at the time, reported the collapse of the makeshift shaft.
“We responded to the call and immediately requested assistance from the Benoni K9 unit and other first responders,” said Frederick Koen of NoJack Vehicle Tracking.
According to Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, the spokesperson for the Benoni Flying Squad, it is believed the excavation where the victims were digging collapsed due to ground instability caused by the recent rains.
“After assessing the situation and securing the area, members of the K9 Unit proceeded with recovery operations.
“Both bodies were recovered just after 16:00 and transported to the local mortuary to establish the cause of death. An inquest docket was opened, and the matter is under investigation,” said Giblin.
Koen applauded all those involved, saying that the dedication of people working in the private security sector and law enforcement could not be overlooked.
